Sexual Arousal

Lets take a look at what occurs when you become sexually excited. Its believed that there are four physical stages in sexual arousal-and our bodies change as we gradually build up through them.

The stage are:

Excitement

This is when your body first begins to respond to sexual thoughts or sexual stimulation. Your heart rate increase as blood is pumped around the body beginning to fill all the small capillaries. As well as feelings of fullness in the genitals, it's also very common to get a stuffy nose. Your face and neck may become flushed and nipples become erect. Breathing becomes heavier as extra oxygen is pumped to your tensing muscles.

Plateau

This is the stage when your body is highly aroused and on the verge of orgasm. Your heart rate and breathing continues to increase as muscles increasing tense and are ready to release. Most people say that the longer they can stay moving between the excitement and the plateau stages, the stronger their orgasm will feel (breast may increase size by up to 50%).

Orgasm

The explosive release of tension. When you orgasm, your pelvic floor muscles will contract between five and 15 times at 0.8 second intervals. This may be accompanied by ejaculation-but not necessarily (some women may experience ejaculation. This may be from the **G-spot or excess lubrication being expelled by the contractions).

Resolution

This is the final stage of the process. Your body begins to relax and return to normal and men enter a *refractory period. But even now, the woman's body in particular experiences some pretty amazing trick (the cervix continues to remain open for a further 20-30 minutes).

*During the resolution phase, men experience the refractory period, when the testes are restocking and preparing to ejaculate again. Until they're ready, the penis will not respond to stimulation. The lenght of time ranges from a few minutes to hours or even days, depending on health and, more particularly, age.

**G-spot (not all women have one). You will find it about 2 inches inside the vagina on the front wall. Unaroused it may only be the size of a pea, but when you're aroused it can be as big as a 2p piece. You'll notice that unlike the vaginal wall which are smooth and silky, the G-spot feels rougher, a bit like the texture of a walnut.

Safer Sex

A fulfilling sexual relationship can help boost good health, but sex and health are also connected in other ways that require serious consideration. The tow major areas of concern are contraception and protection against sexually transmitted diseases, especially AIDS.

THE RISKS OF UNPROTECTED SEX

AIDS is at present an incurable condition that is usually fatal in the long term. It is transmitted by having unprotected sex with someone who is infected with HIV, the AIDS virus. As there are no immediate symptoms of the disease, AIDS virus. As there are no immediate symptoms of the disease, it is not possible to tell who has already contracted it. This means that unprotected sex with any new partner carries a risk. The only way to be absolutely sure that you do not catch the HIV virus or AIDS is to use a condom every time you have sex. Some couple who do not wish to use a condom decide to take an AIDS test at a clinic for sexually transmitted disease to make sure they are both clear of the virus.

With unprotected sex, you are at risk not only from your present partner, but from each of his or her past four years. If you become infected you can infect your next four years' worth of partners, and any children they might bear, without even knowing it.

A recent survey carried out among young people showed that the majority of sexually active young women had taken responsibility for contraception by being on Pill, but that though they were aware of the danger of AIDS, young people often had sex with anew partner without a condom, particularly if they had been drinking. It is important to remember that AIDS is much more dangerous to your health than pregnancy, and unlike pregnancy, there were no way it can be terminated.

ALWAYS USE A CONDOM

The message is clear : anyone who engages in casual sex or is having sex with a new partner should use a condom even if contraceptive protection is provided by the Pill. Women as well as men are recommended to carry condom with them.

HOW TO AVOID AIDS :

  • Always use a condom

  • Avoid anal sex

  • Don't share toothbrushes, razors or any other instrument that might transfer blood from cuts or abrasions.
